First Peoples: a roadmap for enhancing indigenous engagement in museums and galleries

Indigenous peoples have had cultural material and ancestral remains taken from them for 200 years. This is distressing for Indigenous peoples and means that over time, culture might be forgotten. Reconnecting with this cultural material brings about cultural revitalisation… The Roadmap will enable the [museum] sector to develop respectful conversations across the continent. What we want to see in 10 years’ time, is a sector that engages Indigenous communities seamlessly. Seamless engagement involves mutual respect, exemplary communication, organic representation in employment, executive roles, board positions and throughout museums and galleries exhibitions… The participation and representation of Indigenous Australians in this sector is crucial to securing reconciliation between first and settler Australians.”

SDGs LINKAGES
The 5 areas of the Roadmap connect with different SDGs and SDG targets:
1. Reimagining Representation. Supports SDGs and targets linked to reducing inequality (SDG 10), sustainable communities (SDG 11), quality education (SDG 4) and partnerships (SDG 17)
2. Embedding Indigenous Values into Museum and Gallery Business. Also supports SDGs and targets linked to reducing inequality, sustainable communities (SDG 11) and partnerships (SDG 17), as well as consideration in policies to reduce inequalities (SDG 10), reporting progress transparently (SDG 12.6), participation in governance of institutions (SDG 16), and in commercial activities linked to reducing inequalities (SDG 8).
3. Increasing Indigenous Opportunity. Also supports SDGs and targets around training, policies and employment (SDGs 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 5.5, 8, 10.2, 10.3, 11).
4. Two Way Caretaking of Cultural Material. This element connects with SDG 11.4, as well as SDG 1.4, around access to cultural property and other forms of heritage, and 2.5 that incorporates traditional knowledge of crops. The element supports SDGs 4.A, 11, 16 and 17.
5. Connecting with Indigenous Communities. This element supports SDG 16 around cultural property and repatriation. This element is strongly linked to SDGs 16 and 17.
All 5 elements relate to SDG 8.9 (sustainable tourism).

Our Collections Matter indicators:
- Collections development related to genetic diversity of seeds, cultivated plants, farmed and domesticated animals (notably of local or at-risk varieties) and related wild species, for example in herbaria, museums, seed and gene banks, and seed libraries.
- Number of educational programmes related to genetic diversity of domesticated plants, animals and wild relatives.
