“By researching state-of-the-art initiatives in museums and community empowerment, and then moving beyond these initiatives to implement actions in partner countries, our aim has been both to transform individual lives within museum communities, and to create a method of implementation and evaluation that will be applicable to wider regions. The basis of the project is that community-based museums allow under-represented communities to stake a place in history, as well as to contribute to environmental sustainability and community empowerment.”
“Sustainability has become fundamental to the work of museums… In the Latin American context, authors such as De Carli stress the need for museums to contribute to community development; to achieve this goal, institutions must get to know their communities. They should familiarise themselves with the local people and their beliefs, customs and values, as well as with other aspects of local cultural heritage (De Carli 2004b). One central idea that informs the EU-LACMUSEUMS project in several countries is that of a museum whose core initiatives and actions are anchored in local
communities. The purpose of this article is to summarise the initiatives and findings of the EU-LAC-MUSEUMS Peru Case Study– developed within four museums in two regions on the Peruvian north coast– to nurture ties between these museums, their communities and local territorial development.”

SDGs LINKAGES
The resource explores how museums can contribute effectively to local sustainable development (in the proper sense of considerations of all of people, planet and prosperity), which relates to a range of SDGs and targets; tourism for sustainable development is a focus, supporting SDG 8.9. The focus on partnerships contributes to SDGs 17.16 and 17.17, and an effective policy environment to support sustainable development contributes to SDG 17.14. The focus on North-South partnerships supports SDG 17.9. Promoting inclusive urbanization and connections with rural areas supports SDGs 11.3 and 11.A, and ensuring local communities are involved in decision-making also supports SDG 16.7. Ensuring museums are effective and transparent supports SDG 16.6.
Ensuring heritage is resilient contributes to SDGs 2.5 and 11.4. Ensuring people, including both local communities and visitors, can draw on heritage for education for sustainable development and other purposes contributes to SDGs 4.5, 4.7, 4.A, 9.1, 10.2, 10.3, 11.4, 11.7, 12.8, 13.3, 16.B and 16.10. Promoting local economic development supports SDGs 2.3, 8.1 and 8.3.
Case studies explore how people can be involved in caring for their natural environment, which supports both SDGs 6.B and 15.5.
The resource also explores how museums can better support Disaster Risk Reduction (in the face of both natural disasters and climate change), in terms of educational programmes, local partnerships and roles, and in terms of protecting museums and their collections. These aspects contribute to SDGs 1.5, 2.3, 2.4, 3.D, 4.7, 11.5, 11.B, 13.1 and 13.3.
