UNEP One Planet Vision for a Responsible Recovery of the Tourism Sector

“The One Planet Vision for a Responsible Recovery of the Tourism Sector builds on the UNWTO Global Guidelines to Restart Tourism released by the Global Tourism Crisis Committee on 28 May 2020 with the objective to support tourism to emerge stronger and more sustainable from the COVID-19 crisis.
The vision is shared by the members of the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme and partner organizations. It calls for a responsible recovery of the tourism sector from the COVID-19 crisis. A recovery which is founded on sustainability, to build back better, and which therefore can underpin the resilience of the tourism sector.” [p.4]

SDGs LINKAGES
The resource supports a number of SDG targets.
Public health contributes to SDG 3.D (prepare for health emergencies).
Social inclusion contributes towards SDG 1.5 (build the resilience of the poor from climate and other disasters), 8.3 (supporting innovation and small enterprises), 9.1 (infrastructure for wellbeing and economic development), 10.2 (promote universal social, economic and political inclusion) and 14.7 (increase benefits to islands from tourism).
Repurpose tourism as a supporter for the community supports SDG 8.9 (sustainable tourism).
Conserving biodiversity through tourism contributes to SDGs 6.6 (protect and restore aquatic ecosystems), 11.4 (protect cultural and natural heritage), 14.2 (conserve coastal and marine areas), 15.1 (sustainably manage and conserve nature) and 15.5 (prevent degradation of nature). Understanding the contribution of tourism to conservation supports SDG 12.B (measuring sustainable tourism). Mobilising resources from tourism for conservation also supports SDGs 15.A-C.
Monitoring and reporting CO2 emissions from tourism operations contributes to SDGs 12.6 (adopt sustainable practices and sustainability reporting). Moving to renewables supports SDGs 7.2 (renewable energy sources), 9.4 (retrofitting infrastructure for sustainability) and 12.2 (sustainable use of natural resources).
Circular economy supports SDGs 8.4 (circular economy) and 12.2 and 12.5 (prevent waste generation) (for example), 12.7 (sustainable procurement) and 14.1 (reduce marine pollution).
Measuring beyond economic impacts supports SDGs 12.B and 17.19 (measure progress beyond GDP).
