Toolkit - Mapping Cultural Heritage
Intended Audience
Local students and communities who want to document both tangible and intangible heritage, map and understand their neighbourhoods better, and consider adopting place-making elements in their creative projects.
- Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists
- Conserve the unique cultural heritage of Hong Kong [or other places], it is important to be able to identify what makes each place distinctive and to assess if these assets are able to survive change.
- Introduce the concept of cultural mapping as a tool and technique to identify and document tangible and intangible assets and resources of a place.
- Understand how humans place-make, assimilate, create settlements and bequeath legacies to the next generation, and this is the process of place-making.
Place-making is a gradual process initiated by the communities who define their own priorities and place-make in organic corporal ways.

SDGs LINKAGES
This tool is related to SDG targets around urban planning, sustainability of cities and community participation, most notably targets 11.4 (protect cultural heritage) and 11.3 (capacity for participatory and integrated planning), as well as 11.7 (inclusive public spaces for all), 16.7 (participatory decision-making) and 17.17 (encourage partnerships).
Cultural mapping is an out-of-the-classroom learning tool that helps young people and adults unleash creativity and strengthen organizational skills, therefore addresses SDG target 4.4 (relevant skills for employment and entrepreneurship). It also helps re-examine previously overlooked cultural elements in a place where they could possibly sustain local culture and traditional practices, echoing SDG target 8.9 (sustainable tourism and promotion of local culture and products).
