Population growth by nature puts additional pressure on the environment, roading infrastructure, accommodation, services and accessibility. It can also have a knock-on effect to the health and wellbeing of community inhabitants. Increased social diversity calls for greater inclusivity and respecting of differences if we are to achieve a collaborative, prosperous future Auckland. Through understanding and acknowledging the challenges our city faces we can begin working together to improves outcomes for our environment and those that inhabit it.
There is no doubt that the scale of support required to meet Auckland’s growing demands is significant. Collaboration will be our city’s strength in delivering its future sustainability needs. This guide aims to provide supporting collateral to facilitate alignment between Council and our suppliers to help our city achieve sustainable solutions. Furthermore, it provides guidance on the level of detail Council seeks from market respondents to support robust proposal answers that align with sustainable outcome goals.

SDGs LINKAGES
The resource is focused around sustainable procurement (SDG 12.7), which also supports SDG 12.6 (adopt sustainable practices and sustainability reporting), and 11.B (integrated policy approaches for Disaster Risk Reduction) and 16.B (support laws and policies for sustainable development). It provides suggested questions to aid those involved in procurement decisions, and suggested indicators for the targets included under the four headings in the framework.
Each of the four headings in turn supports a range of SDGs and targets, for example social wellbeing will support SDGs 1.3 (ensure social security), 1.4 (equal access to economic and other activities, services and resources), 10.2 (universal social, economic and political inclusion), 10.3 (equal opportunity) and 10.4 (policies for greater equality)
Cultural wellbeing will also support SDGs 4.5 (remove barriers in education), 4.7 (Education for Sustainable Development) and 11.4 (strengthen efforts to protect the world’s cultural and natural heritage); creating cultural infrastructure meeting these aims supports SDGs 4.A (safe and inclusive learning environments), 9.1 (sustainable infrastructure with a focus on equitable access and inclusivity) and 11.7 (safe and welcoming green and public places).
Economic wellbeing will support targets including 4.4 (skills for work); 5.1 (end all forms of discrimination against women and girls), 5.5 (women’s access to participation and leadership positions) and 5.C (policies for gender equality); 8.3, 8.5 and 8.6 (job creation and decent work, increasing training opportunities) and 8.8 (protect labour rights) and 8.9 (sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture). Decoupling economic development from environmental degradation supports SDG 8.4.
Environmental wellbeing supports improving water quality (SDG 6.3) and efficient use of water (6.4), using renewable energy (7.2), 13.3 (increase capacity to address climate change), 11.6 (reducing the environmental impact of cities), 12.2 (sustainable use of natural resources), 12.5 (minimization of waste) and 15.9 (valuing biodiversity in planning decisions). Sustainable use and management of nature supports SDGs 14.2 (regarding marine and coastal ecosystems) and 15.5 (regarding species and habitats).
The resource can also inform work that aims to acknowledge a range of outcomes beyond GDP (SDG 17.19).
