Integrating the Three Dimensions of Sustainable Development: a Framework and Tools

“The United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a universal and transformative development strategy. The 2030 Agenda commits the global community to “achieving sustainable development in its three dimensions - economic, social and environmental - in a balanced and integrated manner”. Integration of the economic, social and environmental dimensions is key to achieving sustainable development. There is, in general, widespread acceptance of why the integration of these three dimensions is necessary; but there are also many questions as to “how” this integration is to be achieved. This publication was produced to assist policymakers in addressing the question of how to achieve integration across the policy cycle and to assess levels of integration.” (p.6)

“This publication is intended to assist policymakers in dealing with the challenges of balanced integration by providing an overview of useful concepts and practical tools that enable the merging of the three dimensions of sustainable development into the public policy cycle.” (p.7)
