“Discussion of the likely impacts of climate change on archives is significantly deficient in the archival profession. Archives hold rare and unique materials that are irreplaceable and institutional adaptation to climate change is critical to the survival of these resources. The earliest effects of climate change are likely to be increased weather events that threaten the physical safety of holdings. Hurricanes, floods, and fires pose particular risks to archives due to potential damage to buildings as well as from limitations of local infrastructure to rapidly respond to disasters. Disaster preparedness for archives needs to include planning responses to a wide variety of situations that threaten holdings. As societies begin to adapt to climate change, archivists should consider how values of sustainability and resiliency might inform archival practice.”

SDGs LINKAGES
Implementing the resource contributes to SDGs and targets related to protecting and safeguarding cultural and natural heritage (SDG 11.4), and ensuring ongoing access to cultural property (SDG 1.4). As a focus is around archivists’ practices, it contributes to SDG 4.4. (skills and training). The framework is focused on strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards (SDG 13.1), and improving institutional capacity on climate change mitigation and adaptation (SDG 13.3). The resource to develop a national-level overview of archival management, contributing to SDG 13.2, ‘Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning and natural disasters in all countries’. The focus on disaster preparedness and disaster response contributes to SDG 11.B, which aims to increase the number of cities and human settlements adopting and implementing integrated policies for disaster risk management and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Ensuring collections information is well looked after and in accessible, notably via digital means, contributes to SDG 9.1 (sustainable, resilient and inclusive infrastructure) and SDG 16.10 (ensure public access to information and ensure fundamental freedoms). The situation of archives in Global South countries at risk from climate change is discussed, and relates to SDG 9.A (Facilitate sustainable infrastructure development for developing countries). The aim is to develop effective institutions (SDG 16.6).
